History of the library:
1973 – Establishment of a new District Library in Banská Bystrica – founder of the library was ONV (District National Committee) in Banská Bystrica
1975 – Delimitation of a part of employees and service spaces in the city from the State Scientific Library in Banská Bystrica to the District Library
1991 – Passing under the control of Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic
1996 – Withdrawal of legal personality of District Library – incorporation into established Banská Bystrica State Cultural Centre – name Banská Bystrica Library in Banská Bystrica
1997 – Name changed to – Mikuláš Kováč Public Library in Banská Bystrica – still part of Banská Bystrica State Cultural Centre – founder Regional Office in Banská Bystrica
1999 – Renewal of legal personality – Mikuláš Kováč Public Library – founder of the library Regional Office in Banská Bystrica
2002 – Mikuláš Kováč Public Library – founder of the library – Banská Bystrica Self-governing region
